Match Made in Heaven: HBO Go and Netflix

Before you break out the champagne to celebrate the idea of such a wonderful collaboration, the partnership between HBO and Netflix is still only a pipe dream. If the two were to come together to form some sort of combined subscription package, I would be one of many that might think again about cutting the cord. Right now Netflix has a little over 23 million subscribers will HBO GO is closing in on 30 million.

A cable free subscription package for HBO GO, bundled with Netflix would be a huge hit. Right now of course, HBO GO is only accessible to those with acceptable cable subscription, although a single password can be shared with as many people as one has in their contact list.

Last week, amidst another poor earning report Netflix CEO Reed Hastings wrote in a letter to investors: “As for HBO, they continue to do great work with HBO GO, which is now available to most U.S. households that subscribe to the premium service. While we compete for content and viewing time with HBO, it is also possible we will find opportunities to work together — just as we do with other networks.”

If Netflix could nab such a high-powered premium content provider all other video services would take a huge hit. But, HBO was quick to end all speculation, “We are not in discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix,” HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson said.

One day perhaps.
