Wieden+Kennedy is no stranger to great ad work. Over the years, the agency has produced some highly acclaimed and wildly popular spots. As the agency of choice for Nike, Wieden+Kennedy has come out strong for this year’s Olympics. Simply speaking, Nike and its “Find Your Greatness” campaign has undoubtedly stolen the spotlight from the London Olympics’ official athletic apparel sponsor, Adidas.
The spot that I chose for this week’s spot is a spinoff of one of Nike’s other Find Your Greatness spots. It features Nathan, a 12 year old out of London, Ohio, (most likely, not a coincidence) who is trying to do something—well—great.
The 1-minute ad does a great job of feeding off the Olympic spirit of achievement and courage. Olympians don’t need much for motivation, but the average American loves to see people trying to do something to better themself. With expertly written copy, and the absence of cheesy music, the ad brings a lot more emotion and atmosphere to the table.
A nice spot like this can go a long way in bringing some goodwill to an already popular company. Something commenter joseg2143 agrees with:
I absolutely love this ad. I used to be 215 lbs., 5’6″ tall. I lost the weight through high school, serve with the Marines, and am always physically active. If this commercial existed when I was younger, it would’ve probably motivated me. The mocking and bullying and desire to be healthy motivated me. But this is just great. Nicely done, Nike.
